There are still some independent spirits in politics
Noemia Onofre De Lima wants "to give the people another choice"
The politics of a democratic society have many strengths and weaknesses, especially relative to the power wielded by organized political parties. But occasionally, the democratic spirit pushes certain courageous individuals to forsake all political affiliation and simply run for office as independent thinkers who would like to offer the people another choice.
Such is the case with Noemia Onofre De Lima, a resident of Chomedey since 1964 and a businessperson for over twenty years.

"I've had the desire to go into politics for quite a long time, because I am passionate about people and wish to serve and make a difference in society," Mrs. De Lima told Courrier Laval Weekly News in a telephone interview.

Asked why she had not sought the party route to elected office, Mrs. De Lima replied that she believed there should be more independent representation in government. "In fact, it is also of great importance to have more women representation in politics, in order to bring about more balanced changes, and that's one of the principal reasons I'm running as an independent."

A realist, Mrs. De Lima did admit that her chances of winning are slim but this did not deter her from entering the race. "I realize it is easier to be elected behind a strong party, but I question how democratic the party system is in this free society. I am pleased to give the people another choice and would be honoured to represent their voice," she stated, adding that she knows the riding well, appreciates its multi-ethnic character and believes that she has something to contribute to the growth and development of its residents.

Married thirty years and a mother of four, Noemia Onofre De Lima brings a variety of experiences to her candidacy in Chomedey. Trilingual (French, English, Portuguese), she has been a businessperson and entrepreneur since 1984. She has worked as a dental assistant and coordinator of dental services. A partner, director, and counselor in a travel agency, she also counts experiences in tourism and the restaurant business among her qualifications. She holds several diplomas and certificates in tourism, first-aid, and computer sciences. An active member of the Portuguese Community in Laval, Mrs. De Lima served on the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Community Centre and Notre Dame de Fatima Parish and is presently on the advisory board of the Laval Portuguese Association.
